While every day is a lipstick day for our team (and many others), this calendar holiday offers a special time of celebration, reflection, joy, and inspiration. If you’re reading this, you can probably agree that the allure of the product in question is not just skin-deep beauty; it’s about the confidence, self-expression, and personal significance it represents for so many of us. 

To honor this colorful, creative cosmetic, I am exploring what makes it one of the most emotionally resonant beauty products on the market, and how it has become a symbol of empowered individuality. From its ancient roots to its psychological effects, grab your favorite tube and dive in with me!

TALE AS OLD AS TIME

In today’s day and age (and booming beauty industry), we have access to just about every formula, finish, and shade imaginable. Lipstick’s historic origins are much simpler, but no less beloved. The ancient world saw it as a marker of power and beauty, relying on natural materials like beetles and minerals to create stunning scarlet shades. In the 17th and 18th centuries, European nobility painted their lips and cheeks to contrast against their expensive white face powder; these elaborate routines became indicators of social status and the scaffolding of hierarchy. And of course, in the 20th century, lipstick became a woman’s war paint, whether in her fight for the vote or against fascism, or as a marker of autonomy as the world changed. Though the Egyptians did not have liquid lipstick and the flappers weren’t too keen on subtle shades, the ritualistic and empowering aspect of our favorite cosmetic has woven itself through each and every era. 

It’s not just lipstick; it’s humanity.

THE KECA’S USNA STORY

If you have been following me for a while, you’re probably familiar with my brand origin story – and just how central lipstick is to it. It’s been my favorite beauty product since childhood, when my best friend and I would make ourselves up after school. The very first seeds of Keca’s Usna were planted during my college years as the result of a class assignment, for which I created a longwear lip makeup brand called “Pucker Paste.” But it wasn’t until I decided to make the jump from corporate to creative that I fully indulged my love of lipstick; when a friend pushed me to seek a new passion to refuel my burnt-out spark, I grabbed the opportunity (and the lipstick applicator) and have not looked back since. 

It’s not just lipstick; it’s inspiration. 

BEYOND THE PHYSICAL 

I have said it once, and I will say it again. Lipstick’s impact is not limited to physical appearances. It can be a secret weapon in so many ways: a moment in a morning routine dedicated to ourselves; a quick boost when we need a pick-me-up; a suit of armor for an intimidating meetup. Even the color of the shade can transform moods. Red is famously regarded as a power color, but also lends an air of sophistication or festivity. Nude can bring the security of feeling naturally (but perfectly) polished. And a deeper plum screams adventure and fun. No matter the shade or the purpose in applying, lipstick is an opportunity to get back in touch with and celebrate ourselves.

It’s not just lipstick; it’s personal care.
